In these talks, Laurence Freeman relates how love of self and love of neighbour both arise from our experience of the love of God. Love of God creates the sense that our very being is gift, and can be fully understood in the divine gift of self that occurs in Jesus. It is a rich and manifold gift freely given, but we need poverty of spirit to receive it and unwrap it.
A way to this poverty of spirit is Christian meditation. To meditate is to enter into the poverty of spirit that allows us to let go of the abstract riches of thought and imagination and move into the fullness of reality, the fullness of love, God’s love. This experience empowers us to make the gift of our self to others.
